Northern fishermen protest against fishing rights to Indians

Fishermen from North staged a protest in front of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) in Jaffna yesterday against an alleged proposal to grant fishing rights (on conditional basis) to Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters.

The media reported that that there was an alleged proposal to allow 250 Tamil Nadu fishermen to fish in Sri Lankan waters on predetermined days, as a solution to overcome the existing crisis.

The protest was organized by a collective of fishermen cooperative societies in the North.

The fishermen demanded that the Sri Lankan government should not consider such a proposal.

They said that if this happens, it will severely affect Northern fishermen’s livelihood.

While noting that the Indian fishermen were using harmful methods such as bottom trawling, the Northern fishermen said they will strongly oppose any move to allow Indian fishermen to access Sri Lankan waters.
