No Federal System through new Constitution: Kiriella

The government will not allow any Federal System to be created through the new constitution, Leader of the House and Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella said.

Northern Province Chief Minister Vigneswaran asks for the solutions beyond the 13th Amendment which was promised by Mahinda Rajapaksa, he said.

"We will not allow any Federal System be created through the new Constitution. The place that has been given to Buddhism will be preserved. A parliamentary committee has been appointed to make the new constitution. Some are saying that through the new constitution Buddhism will lose its place. I can assure you that no such thing will happen," Kiriella said.

Minister Kiriella said so while participating at an event where he vested developed roads with the people in Akmeemana, Galle on October 2.

He said, "The new constitution is still at a discussion level, not even one segment or paragraph has been written yet. We are still discussing on what we can agree and on what we can’t. Our country needs a new constitution that will safeguard the law and allow all communities to live in peace.”

The The following roads were opened by the Minister:

Thalagaha road to Karapitiya road and Beligaha junction to Joolgaha junction, Kithulampitiya Edirisingha mawatha to Navinna road, Hapugala to Batuwanthudawa via Eeriyagaha junction, Wakwella, Hapugala, Sarasavi Asapuwa road and Akmeemana Thotagoda to Kurunda lower road were vested with the people.

The rehabilitation of the Padinnoruwa-Dompe Road was also commenced by Kiriella under the iRoad Rural Road Rehabilitation National Programme.

The minister said: “It was Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who first stated that a solution beyond the 13th Amendment is necessary and that it must be brought through the Parliament. We have all those documents which will be submitted to the Parliament in the near future. Chief Minister Vigneswaran is asking for the solutions beyond the 13th Amendment which was promised by Mahinda Rajapaksa. No matter how many protests are held, the government will not take any action that will harm Buddhism or the harmony of the country.”
