Oil factory catches fire

A fire erupted at a coconut oil manufacturing plant at the Halpanvila Junction in Marawila yesterday.

It broke out around 9pm and lasted nearly five hours. Fire brigades from the Chilaw and Negombo Municipal Councils and the Nattandiya Pradeshiya Sabha together with Marawil police, factory workers and residents of the area doused the fire.

Machines and coconut oil in the factory were completely destroyed in the fire. The cost of the damage and the reasons for the fire has not been assessed yet. No one was injured in the fire, police said. Marawila Police are investigating.
