Defender driver in fatal accident remanded

Tharinda Ratwatte, who allegedly drove the Land Rover Defender involved in the accident in which a State Intelligence Service Constable was killed, was remanded till June 19 by Colombo Additional Magistrate H. Prabhakara today.

When the matter was taken up before court, Deputy Inspector General Ajith Rohana appearing on behalf of the Prosecution informed the Magistrate that the Police Constable, who foiled the Rs.7.9 million robbery at the National Hospital died on June 14, while receiving treatment at the ICU of the National Hospital following a road accident at Bambalapitiya on June 11.

DIG Ajith Rohana further pointed out that the other police constable  injured in the accident continues to receive treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

DIG Ajith Rohana also pointed out that investigations have revealed that the suspect had been under the influence of liquor at the time of the accident. DIG Rohana further stated that they will conduct further investigations based on the CCTV footage.

President's Counsel Kalinga Indatissa appearing on behalf of the suspect stated that the accident was not intentionally done by his client. President's Counsel Kalinga Indatissa further stated that they are ready to pay compensation to the victim and the injured police officer.

After taking into consideration, the Magistrate instructed the prison authority to direct the suspect to the Judicial Medical Officer and submit a report before the next calling date.
The suspect was not produced before Court today.
