Probe into hacking of websites

Information Security Engineer of Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) Ravindu Meegasmulla said that five websites containing the domain name .lk and .com have come under a cyber-attack on Sunday (17) night.

"A team has been set up to monitor the incident including SLCERT staff members with the cybersecurity operation unit of the Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka web hosting companies," he said.
Meegasmulla also added that legal action will be taken under the computer Act of Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, he also added that cyber-attacks had taken place targeting the War Hero commemoration for the last couple of years and when compared to the last couple of years the impact caused by the attack this year is comparatively low.

“On each website they put up a banner connected to ‘Eelam’ in Tamil. We are not aware of the groups connected to the incident because any hacker can post a banner. It will take some time to trace the real culprits,” he said.

“SLCERT took several measures to prevent these attacks but we were only able to minimize the attack and its impact," he added.

Furthermore, Meegasmulla added that few more websites are expected to be attacked in the next few days and SLCERT is actively monitoring the situation.   A leading broadcasting media channel has also fallen victim to this cyber-attack.
